This book takes a fresh look at Socrates as he appeared to three ancient writers: Aristophanes, who attacked him for his theoretical studies; Plato, who immortalized him in his dialogues; and Aristotle, who criticized his political views. It addresses the questions of the interrelation of politics and philosophy by looking at Aristophanes Clouds, Platos Republic, and Book II of Aristotles Politicsthree sides of a debate on the value of Socrates philosophic life. Mary Nichols first discusses the relation between Aristophanes and Plato, showing that the city as Socrates place of activity in the Republic resembles the philosophic thinktank mocked in Aristophanes Clouds. By representing the extremes of the Republics city, Plato shows that the dangers attributed by Aristophanes to the city are actually inherent in political life itself. They were to be moderated by Socratic political philosophy rather than Aristophanean comedy. Nichols concludes by showing how Aristotle addressed the question at issue between Plato and Aristophanes when he founded his political science. Judging Platos and Aristophanes positions as partial, Nichols argues that Aristotle based his political science on the necessity to philosophy of political involvement and the necessity to politics of philosophical thought.

Two Concepts of the Soul in Plato's Phaedo is a fresh study of Plato's psychology with particular focus on his arguments for the immortality of the soul. Through detailed textual study, this new work examines the structure of the dialogue making explicit the nature of the argumentation within the text and its relation to Plato's other accounts of immortality. The author argues that the view of the soul in the Phaedo can be usefully separated into two concepts, which he terms the basic and total concepts. The basic concept consists of the features of the soul that are not used by the character Socrates as the foundation for arguments showing either the pre-existence or post-existence of the soul. In addition to the features contained in the basic concept, the total concept includes the features used as the basis of arguments intending to prove either the pre-existence of the soul, as well as the features of pre-existence and post-existence themselves. This book will prove useful to upper-level undergraduate or graduate students of ancient philosophy, philosophy of the mind, classics, and ancient history.
